Mini Donuts

Donut Creative Writing with Art

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

You know what seems to be really popular here on Forgetful Momma? Mini donuts. I mean, who doesn’t love mini donuts? They were in the inspiration behind this donut creative writing and art printable. Because we not only love to eat them, but we like to decorate them too, and anything can become a homeschool lesson.

If we had to label our homeschool style I would say we’re eclectic homeschoolers, almost unschoolers. We learn from everything that is happening, whether that is ripping a wall out of our kitchen – which we did right before Christmas. Or it’s making mini donuts.

Donut Creative Writing with An Art Element

Making mini donuts is actually really easy, and your kids could easily make them themselves. With that in mind I made this fun creative writing set with an art element. Because my kids, like so many other kids, love to be creative.

The idea behind this is simple.

Work your way through the pages, including the final drawing page. All your child is doing, is designing a donut. They will be asked to:

  • describe it – stating their option, and reasoning for their choices
  • sketch out how you want might want it to look
  • a final picture of how you are going to decorate your mini donut

How We Use This Mini Donut Printable

I might make the mini donuts myself while they are working on their designs.

I might let them make these their self before or after creating their designs. There really is no wrong way.

I enjoy making and serving mini donuts before we have tea time, or before we sit down to watch a documentary on Curiosity Stream. It makes it a good full afternoon of learning covering different subjects this way.

Then add in your milk, eggs, vanilla and melted butter, and continue to mix it until well combined.

Stir in the chocolate chips with a spoon. You could use mini chocolate chips, but I didn’t have anymore on hand from making these before.

Chocolate Chip Mini Donuts

Pour batter into your preheated mini donut maker. Don’t forget to use a non-stick spray!

Chocolate Chip Mini Donuts

Remove your mini donuts from your mini donut maker to cool on a wire cooling rack. You could add some frosting to these, but I think they are sweet enough without frosting.

How to Make Donuts in A Donut Maker

In case you just got your mini donut maker and you are looking to see exactly how to it, this post is for you: How to Use a Mini Donut Maker. I show you how I do it easily with a Ziploc bag.

I have bought a handle batter dispenser for using when making mini donuts, however, this batter is too thick, and the regular sized chocolate chips wouldn’t move through it easily.

Learning place value in math seems like an easy thing, but it can be very confusing for kids. Different columns of numbers,

This math center is great for second, third, and even fourth grade learners. Of course you also have those who do no fall into those grades and are learning place value, have fun with that too!

Students will love using base ten blocks to create the sprinkles on their donuts. Educational and fun.

Included in this set:

There are 3 differentiated response cards and challenge cards for you and your learners.

  • There three black and white donut templates and six different colored donut templates.
  • One page of 100 blocks
  • One page of 10 and 1 blocks

You can use colored paper such as the Astro paper to add a pop of color to your math work. I used this for the base ten blocks so the “sprinkles” were colorful.

I like to use the black and white version, and either color it myself for a little something to do while waiting television, or to have my kids color.

Donut place value - hundreds, tens, ones

Using this Donut Place Value Math Center

Write a number on the response card for your learners to show their work on their donuts, and write in what the H, T, O is in the boxes.

You’ll of course provide them with the hundreds, tens, and ones pieces that I have included.

Create the donuts and the learners show their work writing in what the H, T, O is in the boxes, and writing out the number. Two different cards sets are included.

Let them teach you.

Get creative in teaching your learners. Or, let them teach you. Kids get a kick out of teaching something. It is a great way to see how much they understand, and demonstrate their knowledge.

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” – Albert Einstein.
