Fun Alternatives to Book Reports

by Ashley Mullen

Book reports were the worst in school, who really wants to write a boring report about what you did or didn’t like about a book that you had to read? I had thought to try book reports but I didn’t want to force my oldest to write one, nor did I really want to read one. Instead, we can be creative, it’s what we do best here after all. That’s why we have been enjoying these fun alternatives to book reports.

Alternatives to Book Reports: Design a Game

Create a game based on the book you read. It could be a board game, a card game or another type of game. We’re going to be creating our own version of Monopoly to go along with our Harry Potter.

Go Shopping

Pretend that you are going to buy a gift for the main character. What would you buy them? Consider the character’s personality, likes, and dislikes before deciding on a gift he or she would really love and use.

Prepare a Homeschool Lesson

Grab a non-fiction book, and have you child prepare a lesson to teach you and/or siblings. Learning about Canada or the USA? Give your child a province or state to teach you and their siblings about.

Create a Brochure

Have your child think about the sites in the story that would be educational, fun, or exciting to visit. Whether the story setting is real or imaginary, they can design a travel brochure to entice visitors. Include maps, photos, text, and more.

Create a Comic Book Page

This one is a favorite for my kids. One, they all love graphic novels and comic books. Two, what child wouldn’t like to create a comic book? Comic books don’t require a lot of words. They get to be an artist, they get to review what they read in a different way.

Summer Reading Challenge

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

Summer is full of sunshine, playing outside, going swimming, and all that fun. But we want to prevent the summer slide where kids lose reading levels and math skills setting the back each year. Not all kids love to read, sometimes it’s a struggle to get them to read, so I thought maybe coming up with a different way of finding books might help spark their interest. A summer reading challenge just might be the thing to keep them reading this summer.

Summer Reading Challenge

Just having books around your house can go along way towards encouraging them to read, but why not find some more way to encourage them to try out new books. We head to our library at least once a week, I don’t limit what books my children can bring home which I think has gone a long way towards encouraging their love of reading.

Let’s keep our kids reading this Summer when the sun is shining too hot to stay outside. My first piece of advice would be to let them choose the books. I know you want to pick out of some great books for them, but you choosing just might lead to them not reading.

Summer Reading Challenge books

Every day, your child picks a reading square to complete, and when it’s completed, mark it off with a marker or sticker. When they get Bingo, they get a fun prize! They’re not anything big–just fun things that I know the kids will like. Candy, stickers, staying up late to watch a movie, etc. The dollar store is a great place to get little prizes.

They can then work on another row to get Bingo again. If they fill up the whole card, they get a special prize!
