Tasty Tuesday: Hot Days for Cold Days

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

Cold days are coming, with the end of October we are on borrowed time before we are covered in snow. The wind is freezing cold already, I’ve been sipping hot cups of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate every time I get back in the house.

Warm up with Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

Winter is starting to hit us. The temperatures are starting to drop, the wind is starting to pick up. We have a dusting of snow over everything. When the temperatures drop and we end back inside my kids start asking for hot chocolate. I don’t think there is much that can heat you up from the inside out like this one, at least that we can share with children.

Each morning we have “recess”, and head out for a small walk to check the mail, maybe head over to the skating rink once winter has really settled in. With the wind and the cold here in Saskatchewan it only takes moments to freeze you though some mornings, no matter how many layers we wear.

My kids start asking for hot chocolate as we walk back home, basically we walk to check the mail and our reward is hot chocolate, our sweet snack.

How to Make Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

What you need:

  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cup white sugar

1 cup milk (almond or coconut would work as well for dairy free)
2 1/2 tbsp of mix

How to make it:

Pour into a (good size) mug, top with some mini marshmallows, maybe some shredded chocolate or whipped cream, crushed candy canes, or all of the above, and enjoy.

Read Aloud or Poetry Time

Hot chocolate after playing outside is a great way to warm up and to spend sometime together. I like to grab our read aloud, and or poetry book and use this time to cover those subjects. Why not learn while sipping on a treat.

Stay warm this holiday season, whip up some hot chocolate this holiday season. The perfect treat sitting around the Christmas tree. Sitting around with family and friends. Perfect for an afternoon treat.

For Mom and Dad:

Moms, dads, add a healthy dose of Baileys, or Kahlua to your cup after you settle your kids down this holiday season. Not only will it make your hot chocolate feel a little more “grown up” but it’ll give you an extra boost in warming up.
