How to Juggle as A Homeschool Mom

by Ashley Mullen

This week, today in fact, I was so close to throwing in the towel. On everything. Being a homeschool mom is just one more thing that builds up, and one more thing that you are trying to juggle everyday. Some days everything just builds up and you’re like a dam about to burst, or that has in my case. It is not easy to juggle as a homeschool mom because we have a lot going on.

It has been just over a month since we found out we were moving, and since then we have moved, hosted our parents for a Canadian Thanksgiving, started school again, and finally I have started baby sitting in our home again. All in five (5) weeks. It doesn’t seem real, and it seems like it has been a lot longer than five weeks.

This morning I fault like a failure. Big time failure. At everything. We have barely done school. My house is so disorganized – I am only finally getting a chest of drawers tonight – that disorganization isn’t helping me feel better. For the first time in four years I thought about putting my kids in public school so I could get a “real” job because I was feeling like a failure at providing childcare, something I have been doing for 10 years.

But then after feeding two little 1 year old cuties, they BOTH went down for a nap. I reheated my coffee and here I am. Feeling a heck of a lot better, like I just might figure it all out.

3 Tips to Juggling Momma

Say no! Do not take on more than you can handle. Sometimes, even though you don’t want to, you really just need to say no to whatever it is that is being asked of you, no matter who is asking.

Self care. I can scream it from the roof tops, but this is just as important as saying no to too much. Do you. Take a walk. Get a massage. Go take a bath. Take time for yourself. Do whatever it takes to care of yourself.

Plan. Paper or digital, find a planner that works for you and stick with it. Make time, schedule it in, to plan ahead, even if it is only a day or a week ahead. I plan a week ahead at a time, each Sunday night I decorate my Happy Planner and plan my week ahead. Knowing what your days looks like gives you the chance to see what is important and what you can say no to, and what you can let go off.

Stick to the basics. This doesn’t have to be forever, but until you get your balance, find your routine, stick the basics of what you need to cover in your homeschool lessons. When things are unbalanced or out of whack, we go back to math, reading and writing, before tying to add other things in.

Beating the Homeschooler’s February Funk

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

Homeschooler’s February Funk is real! I am in the February funk, you know when you just feel blah and all you want to do is nap and read books. It’s the weather right? If you live in the colder climates like we do here in Saskatchewan, then the weather is enough to give anyone a case of the funks.

The weather here has been enough to drive us crazy lately, who wants to go outside in -35C weather, no one, not even my kids who love being outside. But we’re also starting to get on each others nerves and no one wants to sit down to do workbook stuff, not even the teacher.

How about changing things up a little bit in your homeschool, even if it is just for a week.

Science (with Dad)

I do most of the homeschooling, but dad is more than capable of doing science experiments with the kids on the weekends which gives Momma a break, and they get some hands of fun.

The first one they did together was Magic Rocks  and we were all interested in watching the magic happen.

You don’t have to leave science experiments to dad though, I enjoy doing them with my kids too, and they have gotten to the point where sometimes I just need to do the set up and then they go and do it. They usually do better than me because they are so much more open to trying out new and different things, and usually testing out their own way of doing things.

New Read Alouds

We have just started reading Alice Adventures in Wonderland. It’s not part of our BookShark curriculum, but just something for fun, and then we’ll be watching the movies. I choose this book because I though they would enjoy it. Pick a book that you think your kids might really enjoy.

Take A February Break

Take a week off from school. Here in Saskatchewan public schools have a February break and an Easter (Spring) break. I have to think that there is a reason for the February break and it might just be due to that funk we’re feeling as homeschoolers affecting everyone.

You can make up time later for this break, or not worry about it in general.

If you don’t feel up to taking a week off, maybe shorten school days or or weeks to give everyone a little break while we wait for spring and warmer weather.

Get Out of the House

Get out of the house a little each day, or every other day, to change things up. Getting into a rut isn’t going to help. You don’t have to stay at home to be a homeschooler, head to the library, science center, or museum. Meet up with some friends at one another’s homes for play dates for your kids and coffee and chat for you.

Spend a Day in the Kitchen

You kids can learn so much in the kitchen whether they are cooking or baking, or just helping out a bit. Cooking is all about reading, math, and science. That’s three subjects you just covered when you made cookies with your kids Momma.

There is freedom in homeschooling. You do not need to burn yourself out to get everything done or to make sure that you are doing school everyday. Learning happens all around, just find ways that work for you.
