How I Fail to Keep an Everyday Routine

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

We have almost two years of homeschooling under our belt now. No matter how hard I try I still fail to keep and everyday routine. Something happens, usually my own fault, that we get off schedule.

For a while we were afternoon homeschoolers, but then the weather changed and we switched to getting everything done in the morning. But guess what happened, the weather changed again and we are once again way off any type of routine.

How I Fail to Keep an Everyday Routine

If you happen to follow me on Instagram, you may have seen the other day, that I shared our calendar for the month of April, just a general idea of what we will hope to get done each day. It won’t all happen that way. And I will definitely feel guilty about it, and worry about whether or not I am failing my kids.

Bad Days

Some days are just no good, bad days, and there is nothing I can do to turn them around. It might be that the kids are having the bad day, or it could be that I am having bad day. For the most part I know that I can turn their day around, but if I’m having a bad day, there goes our day, I am not homeschooling. Routine be damned, I’m going to sit, drink coffee, and maybe read a book.

Great Days

Do you have those days where everything seems to go so smoothly? They happen once in a while here, where we get the school work done, we go to scheduled outings. I think we had one of these days in 2016. Maybe.

Honestly

I can honestly tell you, that the main reason I fail to keep to an everyday routine is because it bores me. I get bored by doing the same thing everyday, so sitting down to do writing, then math, then blah, blah, blah gives me the blahs.

I need to shake things up, get out the house, get away from the table or computer.

Guilt

I feel guiltly whenever we “skip” school, especially if it’s my fault. I mean, I made the decision to homeschool our kids, and I should be able to stick with a everyday routine, you know, the routine that I really want to stick to, even if I can’t.

Then I remember that I am teaching my kids to be real people, in a real world, in a real environment where things aren’t always routine. I want them to be flexible and go with the flow and not panic when things aren’t going directly as planned. Which is the way we tend to live our life. I am teaching them to not be so stuck to a routine that they freak out when things go wrong.

Are you a strict to the routine person, or more like me, wanna have one, but just can’t do it?

Also… homeschooling parents, if you are looking for more posts about feeling mom guilt, make sure you check out the Mom Guilt Bingo iHomeschool Network has happening.
