Homeschool Shopping with Amazon

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

I’d love to be able to shop around for the best price always, but have you actually taken the time to do the price checking? I’m sharing some great deals from Amazon with you, I find that other than buying used, Amazon has the best prices for the homeschool things I am looking for.

It takes a long time to get done, there are so many sites that I check, looking for the best price. That’s the time that I’d rather spend playing with my kids, chasing them around the pool, and such, so Amazon is my go to.

Hooked on Phonics is one of the most trusted brands in teaching children how to read. This set is for Pre-K-2nd graders who are looking to create a strong foundation in phonics. This set includes workbooks as well as access to the HoP online learning portal.

This 12 CD collection features perennial classics you’ll remember from childhood like Peter and The Wolf, The Nutcracker, and The Tortoise And The Hare. Each disk also includes activities to complete for students after they have finished the story.

Times Tales is one of the best ways to teach kids multiplication – period. One mom said, “Best money spent on math. It really worked. Within a week my 9 and 11-year-old completed 110 problem text with scores of 99% and 100% respectively. Wow.” Audio, visual, logical – what’s more to ask?

Check out our review here, not sponsored, we loved it for remembering the facts.

My Human Body Sticker Activity Book is an interactive journey around your amazing body. Includes more than 200 stickers and printed on high-quality paper that’s perfect to color in with felt-tips or crayons. This book is ideal for long journeys, rainy days and a great gift for curious children.

Tegu blocks are the wooden magnetic blocks that are captivating children’s attention worldwide. Aside from being an outside-of-the-box toy, Tegu cares about creating social good, and hires workers in Honduras to create these wonderful toys. Plus they plant a tree with each purchase. 🙂

Summer Learning Made Easy

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

Summer vacation is here for some of you, and for others it is just around the corner. Let’s prevent summer slide when young minds sit idle for a few months and make summer learning fun and easy… something they don’t notice is happening is even better!

Summer Learning Made Easy

Summer Learning Made Easy!

Did you know: Children who do not read over the summer will lose more than two months of reading achievement. Summer learning doesn’t have to be doing actual school work, let them have fun doing different things that encourage learning and reading.

I have a number of posts that you can check out for fun and educational activities to do this summer that encourage not only summer learning but all year learning. My homeschool page as amazing resources and science experiments, and my kids activity page is full of ideas to do with your kids.

Beginning Architecture

Mini Frank Lloyd Wrights of the world unite! This book provides the early fundamentals of structures, and home design. The sky is the limit, and this series provides a strong foundation, putting the FUN in fundamentals with a truly engaging program. Summer is a perfect time to give this comprehensive online course a try – you’ll be grabbing marshmallows for camping, anyway. Why not do s’mores after you complete a project?

Zone Cleaning

Every season is a great time to teach your little ones, but the summertime is a special opportunity to learn about cleaning! Kids often have a little more time on their hands – and do a little more outdoor activity that brings in the dirt! Zone Cleaning comes with a DVD that explains cleaning step-by-step by room using visuals, and includes a dry erase flipbook with checkboxes for each task to be completed. Kids learn from professionals, and get a sense of accomplishment when they cross off their tasks.

Tegu On-The-Go Magnetic Blocks

These are the coolest! Remember geometric blocks from your own early school days? I used to have Haba brand and they’re no longer being made. But fear not! The Tegu blocks take the concept and run with it. These handcrafted geometric blocks have a beautiful color palette and more importantly – magnets! The possibilities are endless with hands-on play-learning about magnetic fields and chemistry while creating something unique. It comes with a handy carry pouch, too – perfect for road trips and easy-to-pack-up activities when you reach your destination. A great example of summer learning without them even realizing it!

Peel, Play & Learn Solar System Wall Play Set

Summer star gazing has always been a favorite activity. With clear skies and warmer nights, kids can simply look up and discover the universe! This reusable wall decal set brings it all back to learning (and hands-on fun) – in turn making the sky a boundless source for wonder and education.

eMedia Guitar Beginner Pack for Kids

Time to face the music – but in a good way! SUMMER is coming and kids tend to want to flex their creative muscles a bit more than the rest of the year. This quarter-sized guitar is a great fit to kick-off a lifelong love of music.

Designed to keep kids engaged and learning, the comprehensive set includes software with 60 guitar sessions that use videos, songs, and specialized interactive music games. Maybe my favorite part is that you don’t need to know guitar for your learner become a rock star – instead, animated Gary the Guitar will lead the way, and guitarist and instructor (with a PhD!) demonstrates the skills your little one will learn. Music to my ears.

Summer Worksheets

Stave off summer brain drain with Teachers pay Teachers! There are tons of worksheets and activities to choose from, with age-appropriate challenges in subjects ranging from math to creative writing. How about a summertime creative writing challenge?

I hope you have found some resources to use for some summer learning.

Volcano Experiments for Kids

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

Have you and your children exploded anything lately? Or ever? When I say science experiment, Austin (my oldest) asks if we can explode something. I wonder if I should worry about that or be proud that she wants to learn about interactions of different things.

One thing on our science to-do list is to make a volcano. The construction will be them with Dadda, cause he likes stuff like that, but the explosion will be all me (and them).

Before you jump into the volcano science experiment, share these interesting facts about volcanoes with your little learners:

  • There are about 1,900 active volcanoes on the earth. This means they have erupted recently or they might erupt. Some volcanoes are extinct. Over 80 volcanoes have been found in the ocean.
  • Most volcanoes happen on fault lines, or cracks in the Earth’s surface.
  • Most of the earth’s volcanoes are in the Pacific Ocean, in an area called the Ring of Fire.
  • The word “volcano” comes from Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.
  • Lava from volcanoes can reach temperatures of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Volcanoes spew out ash and toxic gases, as well as lava and lava boulders.

Volcano Science Experiment for Kids

Check out how these kids use household chemicals to recreate a volcanic eruption!

Using the Volcano Kit from the video, little scientists are asked to mix chemicals to make the volcano erupt! This will be an experiment that Young Scientists will want to repeat again and again!

What’s included?

  • A large, detailed 12-page manual explaining the topics and each experiment
  • Each manual is based on the popular Magic School Bus books and TV series

What are people saying about the Magic School Bus Science?

Parents and teachers are constantly talking about the Magic School Bus Science Club. Jamerrill from Free Homeschool Deals shared a blog post of her kids have a blast with the science kits. Jamerrill says she could “open up a science kit, turn to a lesson page, and jump right into that hand-ons activity. It helps me feel like a ‘fun mom’ because we’re doing a science activity, and I didn’t have the stress or mess of pulling it all together.”

I found this awesome video review by Eric Poor showing off a couple of human body experiments from the Magic School Bus subscription. Look at his face light up with a HUGE smile each time he does an experiment!!

Here’s some more feedback about the Science Kits from Educents shoppers:

“I was not expecting it to be this good.” – Amber W.

” I was really impressed by the hands-on approach of learning, and then having it explained so that a child would understand it. I would highly recommend this!” – Kelly L.

“I feel this is perfect as a hands-on activity to supplement the worksheets we download from other sellers.” – Sasha B.

How to Get the Science Kits

Setting Homeschool Goals for Success

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

How are you doing on your goals for the year? Have you thought about making resolutions for your child’s education? Are you like me, and starting to think about goals for the following year? Here are some of the homeschool goals that we are thinking about in planning the next year for success.

Setting Homeschool Goals for Success

Resolution #1: Learn a new language

Maybe you don’t speak a second language, but you and your kids still can learn together. I just learned our library offers use of Rosetta Stone, go check and see if you library offers something to help with learning/mastering a language.

Also check out this post on learning French – frugal resources.

Resolution #2: Create healthy habits

Yoga promotes healthy habits in a fun and active way and reap benefits like balance, focus, flexibility, self-control, improved posture, and so many more healthy habits. My kids enjoy Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube.

Resolution #3: Keep the house clean

Enough said. Chores are a great way to learn life skills.

Resolution #4: Be more creative

Kids have to have time to be creative. With all the social stresses and studying, leave room for fun. Whether it be learn a new skill, journaling, or start playing an instrument – encourage creativity!

Resolution #5: Get hands-on

Lessons are more fun when you get your hands a little dirty. Take reading lessons outside, do a weekly science experiment. One of the best ways to include science experiments is when learning about just about anything. Learning about animals? How do arctic animals stay warm? Try this experiment to find out!

Arctic Animal Science Experiment

Add science fun to your weekend projects when everyone can get involved.

Resolution #6: Learn new tech skills

Your kids might already spend a lot of time in front of a screen, but is that screen time educational? Use those hours to learn new tech skills! If your kids are already enjoying Minecraft, consider introducing them to other ways of learning code.

What are your resolutions this year? Have your children set resolutions for themselves? Share in the comments!!
