Cornstarch

Cornstarch Fun Round Up

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

We have a lot of fun with cornstarch in our house. I am always looking new ways to to have fun with my kids, and of course prefer when I already have everything in our cupboards.

Cornstarch Goop

Cornstarch alone can be… messy, its silky soft and flies everywhere when spilled, or even worse, dropped. Add in a bit of water you get goop.

Cornstarch Goop – water and cornstarch mixed together. You can add in a little food color, liquid paint, etc. It is the weirdest thing, it is solid you are scooping it up into your hand, but then it turns liquid and melts out of your hand.

3 Ingredient Face Paint

Face Paint! What child doesn’t love having their face painted? This doesn’t stain your child’s face, a concern I understand well. My mom used to use Crayola markers on my face as a child, and I have done it with my own, except, then all of a sudden gauge started having a reaction to them on his skin. So homemade face paint it is.

Water Color Paint

Water Color Paint. Save yourself some money at the art supply store and make your own!

Frozen Chalk Paint

Frozen Chalk Paint. This is some fun for a hot summer day!

You can mix cornstarch with shaving cream, add in a little paint for some soft messy play.

Cornstarch can make a great playdough, and putty. Or, maybe you want to make a bouncy ball.

Cornstarch Bouncy Ball

You could really get your kids attention by making some bouncy balls with them!

We have made both of these recipes a few times one is: Silky Stretchy play dough. It makes your hands feel amazing!, and the other one is Wonder Dough. Two simple ingredients in each.

I think out of all of these idea, the goop is and always will be my favorite things to do with kids. Especially the little ones, they see magic everywhere.

3 Ingredient Face Paint for Kids

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

When I was little my mom used to “paint” my face all the time, using Crayola markers. As far as I can remember they always washed off without a problem. I was also well behaved and never did it to myself. I wouldn’t use them on Brookland or she’d be covered all day, everyday. Instead I found a face paint that is easy to make and washes off quite easily.

Only three ingredients: Food color, lotion, cornstarch.

4 Things I Always Have for Kids

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

In my house it’s simple to pull out a quick, fun, time killing activity. I always have 4 things on hand for kids to use, besides toys. They make great boredom busters, inside or outside, messy or clean play. Getting ready to move again and these will once again be the last things to get packed. Most kids love all of these, and can last 5 minutes or, like in our house, more than an hour.

My kids are huge fans of science experiments that answer a question they might have, or playing board games but sometimes we need to be bored to grow our imagination.

Paint

They can paint anything: a table, the ground, paper, the bathtub, get creative!I’m not a fan of painting in the house, because no matter that materials I provide, it is inevitable that they will be finger painting and move far off the paper.

Cornstarch

Add water to cornstarch and they will have more fun than you could ever imagine also mix with shaving cream, paint to make the experience last or create new ones.
Cornstarch play

Play dough

Playdough or the ingredients to make it they don’t need toys to play with play dough. There are so many different recipes for playdough, making for different textures and/or smell.

Paper and Crayons

Great for on the go too.

Of course another things we always have it outside time. While right now there are days that it is too cold and windy to go out, but the kids love getting suited up to go out and play. While when I have a house full it can take up to 45 minutes to get out of the house, it is definitely a great way to entertain them. Bonus, since winter weather started (in October) they all have learned to get some of their stuff on by themselves.

We definitely can’t wait until warmer weather.

Messy Friday: Planet Oobleck

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

Through Pinterest I found this site, 24/7 Science. Through it I found the activity, Plant Oobleck and couldn’t wait to do it with the kids today.

Now, this is going up later than planned, due to the kids not waiting to clean up the playroom. Normally I said its time to clean up and the kids race around knowing that something is planned and can’t wait to do it. Today, they continued to play, toys were being thrown and there was yelling and fighting. Therefore, everything I had gotten out and ready got put away. Finally this afternoon we got to explore Plant Oobleck.

Science Experiment with Lemon Juice & Vinegar

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

Yesterday at our local dollar store I saw some test tubes (they are suppose to be for doing shots) and I thought of the possibilities for us to have some messy fun. For our first science experiment we started simple. Baking soda, baking powder, cornstarch, and cream of tarter in the test tubes, and vinegar and lemon juice in squeeze bottles.
