Getting Hands on with History – Hieroglyphs

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

I’m not a history buff so teaching my kids history this year was a little challenging but we have all learned a lot. It is amazing what a great book can do for perking interesting, I should have known this of course, being a huge book lover! While history isn’t my thing, creativity is, and it also is engaging for kids and my kids are loving how hands on they are getting while learning and revisiting their book and these hieroglyphs are just one example of that.

Hieroglyphs - history

We have a really great book for our history lessons this year, The Usborne Book of World History, it came with our Reading with History Level 1 curriculum. This books is full of hands on learning activities and crafts to do with your kids as you’re learning about different periods and cultures in history. Creating stories using the early invention of writing, hieroglyphs, is one of the activities that we turned into our own and was one of our favorites. (It was not done exactly this way in the book.)

We used modeling clay from the dollar store, we just lucked out that they had it in stock when I was looking but Walmart and Amazon are usually my go to place to get it. We also used some playdough toys like the rolling pins and knives.

Each of my kids got a good sized chuck of clay rolled it flat and then proceed to “write” a story on their clay using hieroglyphs. They used a combination of those that were shown in the book and those they created on their own.

Hieroglyphs - Reading with History Level 1

I want to point out that my kids did theirs on placemats because it made clean up easier and I didn’t have to worry about it sticking to my dining room table, which is where we do school. I’m planning on doing this again this summer, outside where the clay will dry faster, and encourage new, nature inspired stories.

What kind of story do you think that your kids would write using hieroglyphs?

Charlotte’s Web – Watercolor Web

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

This year we’re using BookShark Reading with History as I have mentioned before, which comes with some really great read aloud books. We’re just finished with Charlotte’s Web, a favorite of mine from growing up. To add a little more Charlotte’s Web to our day, we did this watercolor web as an art project.

To start off our Charlotte’s Web webs, I started off my making a spider web on paper with a marker. I used a Sharpie to prevent the marker from running with water. Make you web look however you want, each one of ours was just a little different.

Charlotte's Web - Watercolor Web

Grab your favorite water colors, paint brushes, and some water. You may also want to cover your painting surface. We used homemade watercolors because I hadn’t thought this one out ahead of time. Use regular paint if you like as well.

I love seeing how each child paints their web. They each have their our outcome in mind. Or they are just about seeing how much paint they can get on their paper.

Charlotte's Web - Watercolor Web

Our finished pieces are hanging in our half bath in these awesome artwork frames that I bought years ago. It keeps their art displayed and the art in our home changing.

You’re child can draw (or paint) on a spider, or make their own “miracle” in the web with wording of their choice once the paint dries.

Have you read Charlotte’s Web with your kids? It was a hit for all of us. And then we watched the movies too. First the older one, made in 1973 (which is the only one I had seen prior to this) and then the 2006 version which you can watch on Amazon Prime video.  I love reading the book and then watching the movie, both with my kids and on my own.

Thanksgiving Turkey Handprint Craft

by Ashley Mullen Leave a Comment

One of my favorite holidays is coming up, really fast if you’re in Canada like me, Thanksgiving! Last year we sent out some cute mail to our family far away from us. A little “we’re thinking of you even if we’re not with you” mail, a cute turkey handprint craft.

What you need:

  • washable paint
  • paper
  • paint brushes – optional

How to Make A Turkey Handprint

Depending on the age of your child, it may be easier to have them strapped into their highchair to prevent them running wild in the house with a painted hand.

Thanksgiving Turkey Craft

It’s super simple, perfect for your youngest, and makes a great keepsake. All you need is paint and paper. A paint brush is helpful but not necessary.

Take the hand that is going to be the turkey hand and paint it.

Brown on the palm and thumb – the turkey body and neck/head.
Paint each finger a different color.

Thanksgiving Turkey Handprint Craft

Press said hand down onto paper. Little fingers move, let it be what it is, it just makes it unique to each child’s work of art. Older kids will be able to hold their hand still for longer.

Thanksgiving Turkey Handprint Craft

Once your turkey has dried grab a couple markers for the finishing touch. Some yellow legs and feet. An eye, we used black. As well red for the wattle. I had to look up what the wattle was called.

We did ours on this little poem. Clicking this link with open up the PDF in a new screen for you to use.

These are what we sent out, Grandparents got one from each of my little turkeys.

I have more printables in my free resource library that you get access to when you sign up to my weekly newsletter. The the turkey printable is available for you now, without signing up though I would love for you to sign up.
