Valentine’s Day

Not everyone does something for Valentine’s Day and we don’t do much for it either. Usually a small box of chocolates for each of us. I do like to do a themed craft or activity with my kids for Valentine’s Day. Read some books with a Valentine’s Day theme.

Where Did Valentine’s Day Originate?

There are a few different theories about where Valentine’s Day originated. As it turns out, nobody really knows the true history behind this storied holiday, nor do any of the theories completely check out. Historians find themselves arguing over the exact traditions from which the present-day holiday takes inspiration.

A couple of theories:

In Ancient Greece, people observed a mid-winter celebration for the marriage of the god Zeus and the goddess Hera. Some historians wonder if these traditions may have influenced the way we now celebrate February 14.

Saint Valentine was a Roman priest who performed weddings for soldiers forbidden to marry, because of a Roman emperor edict decreeing married soldiers did not make good warriors and thus young men could not marry.
