When you first start thinking about homeschooling your child, or children, you are often overwhelmed with all the things that you are going to need. Or all the things that you think you are going to need. There are some homeschool supplies that first-time homeschoolers might want to get ahead of time.

Deciding to homeschool is a huge decision and sometimes it can feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders once you make it, but then comes the weight of all the other decisions that you need to make. From curriculum to books, to co-ops and field trips, and then the school supplies that you’ll want and/or need for your homeschool.

What I Think is Important:

These are two things that I think are super important for new homeschoolers.

Library Card – Books are needed to learn, and there is no need to buy every single book that you need, yes, you definitely are going to buy books as you go along, but not every book is worth a permanent spot on your bookshelf.

Printer – No matter how digital your homeschool might be, you are going to be printing something at some point, and probably more than you realize. I have an Epson printer, but I am going to be saving my pennies for an Epson Ecotank printer.

Of course, you’ll want everything to go with having a printer like paper and ink.

Things You Might Want

You just might want to invest in a computer, tablet, laptop, some type of technology for online resources and lessons. We have ended up with a number of devices here in our own home that are used for learning. All three of my kids are doing their math online this year which has been a huge help for me.

Binders. Binders of all sizes have been and are still in use in our homeschool. I have 3-inch binders for portfolios, 1 1/2-inch binders for different school subjects, and fun school work. You can buy them in bulk or multiples to save a little on the cost too.

Bonus Things

There are some things that I don’t think I could have made it through the first few years without a science center membership.

Subscriptions to different streaming networks like Curiosity Stream which is all documentaries which is perfect for days when you just don’t feel like doing sit-down school work.

There are a million different things you might need or you might want when you are starting out your homeschool journey. I recommend getting the basics and not overwhelming yourself or your kids with all the extras.
