Canadian History and Social Studies Curriculum

I have had numerous people asking about options for Canadian history and social studies curriculum and learning resources, and to be honest I didn’t have a lot of recommendations. But after some searching and reading and seeing what other Canadian homeschoolers are using I have some recommendations.

The Canadian Homeschooler

My first recommendation is The Canadian Homeschooler, this resource I have been using for years, since starting homeschooling. She has many great resources at affordable prices, and covers both Canadian history and social studies. A few of her options, not definitely not all, include:

The Canadian Homeschooler Learning Centre
The Canadian Homeschooler Learning Centre

Diana Bailey  – Teachers Pay Teachers

This link is to a Teachers Pay Teachers store. I have four of Diana Bailey’s bundles and they are great and something we have been using in our homeschool.

She has a Canadian History category. As well as a Canadian Social Studies category.

Donna Ward (Northwoods Press)

Donna desires to bring you living history through exciting and authentic resources with a commitment to quality and excellence. Not only can you buy great individual books to aid in your lessons but you can buy bundles specific to the ages you are teaching, and there are also courses available.

I have not used these bundles or courses, but have many of these books in our personal library.

The Great Canadian Adventure

This one is relatively new, and I have not looked super hard at it yet. It is a subscription service, once a month you get a box:

  • Tiny Travelers:  12 activity books for children ages 5-6 focusing on literacy, numeracy, and geographic awareness.
  • The Great Canadian Geography Adventure: 12 activity books and key supplies for children ages 7-12, with a focus on Canadian geography.
  • The Great Canadian History Adventure: 12 history sets to create your own Smashbook of Canadian history for children ages 8+.

Creek Edge Press

Complete Set of History Cards (Canadian)  – This K-8 course is comprised of discovery-oriented tasks designed to facilitate engaged learning about Canadian History.

Your students will investigate and explore Canadian culture and history through engaged learning designed to introduce and reinforce key content related to Canadian History.  Tasks cover Native Canadians through the Dawn of the 21stCentury.

Layers of Learning

These nine Canada units take the place of some of the U.S.-focused units within their Years 3 and 4 curriculum.  Even though these are called “supplements” they are complete units and can stand alone.

Inside you will find activities, games, crafts, printable activities, discussion questions, web links, lists of books to check out from your library, and more.

If you know of other Canadian history and social studies resources or curriculum, please let me know so I can add to this list.
