Yesterday at our local dollar store I saw some test tubes and I thought of the possibilities for us to have some messy fun. For our first science experiment, we started simple. Testing acidic reactions in this experiment with lemon juice, and baking ingredients. This is really great for your youngest learners. Take it outside to make for an easy clean-up afterward.

Setting Up Your Science Experiment with Lemon Juice and Vinegar
This is really very easy activity to do with your kids. I bought a couple condiments bottles to put lemon juice in one and vinegar in the other.
In each test tube I added a baking ingredient, two test tubes per ingredient – two of baking soda, two for baking soda, etc.
The test tubes we bought were flat on the bottom so we don’t have to have something to stand them up in, however, we discovered that our picnic table’s umbrella hole was a perfect fit. We started by smelling each of the squeeze bottles when we first went outside, and then each of the tubes as we used them.
I also told her what we usually use each of the ingredients for, why we have them in the first place.
I love the look of wonder on her face here!
She was quite excited at this reaction, baking powder, and lemon juice. It just kept on going until there was no baking powder left. The cornstarch and cream of tarter didn’t have reactions and she was okay with that and ready to move on to the next tube. Once they were all done, she was looking for something else to mix to see what happens.
That lead to mixing everything together in her bucket. There was a lot of noise and some reactions. I think we’ll be doing this or something similar, again.
