Is Homeschooling for Us?

We are going to be a homeschooling family this year. It is new, it is scary, its a lot for us to take on, but we’re gonna do it. It’s still so weird to think that we’re going to do this, let alone say it out loud, to anyone.

Deciding to homeschool

Why are we going to do?

  • It’s not for religious reasons. Unless you count avoiding religion, because, well, there are places around here where the only school in the area is Catholic.
  • I’m not (completely) bashing the education system here.

It’s just something I feel I need to do.

I need to take control my children’s education.

Do I know what curriculum I am going to be using? I’m not using curriculum. I know, for the first time at bat I’m probably making this much harder on myself, but it is very very hard to find (boxed) curriculum that is not religion based.

But I do know that I am going to do it. Austin will be staying home for grade one.

At first she wasn’t too in to the idea, but after going to a local homeschooling meeting she has jumped on board with the idea. We’ve talked about her staying home, the types of things we’ll be doing. We’ve done “school work” at home, workbooks, and she loves it.

The first thing that my mom said when I told her I was going to be doing this was that I hadn’t been happy with the school since Austin had started and was happy that I was going to do something about it.

Plus, I figure I have been unschooling for this long, Austin didn’t learn anything new while in Kindergarten, and Brookland is doing great right along with her. So here we go! Plus:

You know the saying “It takes a village to raise a child.”? Yea, me too, I’m not loving that idea necessarily here.
