Homemade Stir Fry Sauce From Scratch

I want to re-share a delicious recipe with you all. From scratch stir fry sauce. No more running out to the nearest store for one of those little packages or, in my case, asking Hubby to pick one up on his way home. Instead, grab these 7 everyday ingredients that are most likely to already be in your cupboard and make your own.

This doesn’t take long to throw together and can be full of a lot of good vegetables. If you are looking for another easy and fast meal idea check out our skillet mac n’ beef recipe… delicious!

What You Need:

  • 2 cups of broth – chicken, beef or vegetable
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp ginger powder

How to make Stir Fry Sauce from scratch:

Throw all the spices and corn starch into your jar, add the vinegar, soy sauce, and broth of your choice. Shake well, make sure you have a good sealing container for mixing and shaking this up in.  Once you set it down, it will start to settle, just shake it again and all is good.

Take it from me: BEFORE shaking make sure the lid is on. Otherwise, you end up with stir fry sauce all over your cupboards, drawers (which don’t close tightly), and your clean floor.

Once your stir fry veggies and meat are cooked add your sauce to it, hopefully, your skillet has high enough sides to keep you from making a mess. You may not need it all. Refrigerate the rest for a couple of weeks.

Bring it to a boil, then turn it down to a simmer. You can choose to cover it or not. Give it a stir every 5 minutes or so. You’ll notice it starting to thicken up.

Simmer over low heat to thicken the stir fry sauce more, stir infrequently.

After about 15-20 minutes it should be ready to be enjoyed.

I’ve now been making my stir fry in my slow cooker. About an hour or so before serving I add my sauce, and it thickens up in my slow cooker.

Or you could thicken it up in a small pot and add it to your stir fry.

How to Thicken Stir Fry Sauce

Make sure that you have used the right amount of cornstarch, 2 tablespoons. That is important, it won’t thicken as much without it.

There are two things you can do to thicken your sauce more:

  • add another tablespoon of cornstarch
  • let it simmer at a low temperature for a little longer – this is what I do – do not stir for a few minutes
