Homemade Tortillas

Hubby has been making this for quite a few months now and we all love them. They, like so many other things, are much better homemade compared to the store bought tortillas out there.

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp butter/margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Mix all ingredients together. Place a floured surface and knead for a few minutes.

Divide the dough into 24 equal pieces and roll them into a ball.

Start preheating a pan over med-high high. Using a well floured rolling pin roll out each ball into thin round tortillas.

Place tortilla onto hot pan, cooking until golden and bubbles start forming on each side.

It takes a lot of work, but so worth it. We stopped buying them and instead started freezing them to have on hand.

5 simple ingredients, that you probably already have in your house, compared to the list of ingredients on the package of store bought.

We are planning on picking up some sun-dried tomatoes, dicing them and adding it to the dough next, maybe trying some pesto and other things as well for some variety.

If any of you try them I’d love to know what you think of them.

  4. Homemade tortillas are yummy. My Mom makes them and I use her recipe. Your recipe is pretty similar, except instead of butter it uses Crisco.

Great job at making them round. I have always found that to be the hardest part. :-)

  5. I prefer the homemade tortillas too. I just don’t find the time to make them and need to. Yours look awesome. Following along as a new follower from the hop = )

  6. Not fluffy – just some bubbles. In the picture of them finished you’ll notice there are some brown spots on them, those would be the bubbles.

  7. I tried making homemade tortillas a few months ago and they were a flop! Of course, I wasn’t using a tortilla press like the instructions said to…… I’m glad to see someone had some success!

  13. I really do need to try this. I bake breads and other things but never thought to make my own tortillas. That would probably be great for quesadillas since you have more control over how “cooked” they get. :) [#TALU]
