I love making homemade goodness for my family, baking, cooking and decor. I found a recipe at least a year ago for homemade bagels, boy was I excited, however, they were a lot more work than I was looking for. This is my version, ingredients changed and directions made so simple anyone can do it.
Part1:
Throw it all into your bread machine and set use it on the dough setting, usually about 1hour 30 minutes.
- 3 3/4 cups flour
- 1 1/4 cups hot water
- 1/4 cup butter/margarine (placed in the hot water)
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
Part 2:
When down knead it in your hands for a minute, trying to get all the air pockets out. Place on floured surface cut into 12 pieces.
Shape your pieces so that they are somewhat circular, then using your thumb make a hole in the center, you may want to stretch it a bit as it will become smaller as the dough rises and bakes. Cover for 10 minutes. Pre-heat your oven to 400F.
Part 3:
Place on a greased baking sheet, you may want to stretch the holes a bit again, your choice, ours rarely have holes anymore, they taste the same either way. Bake for 17-20 minutes.
Ingredients
- 3 3/4 cups flour
- 1 1/4 cups hot water
- 1/4 cup butter/margarine (placed in the hot water)
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
Instructions
- Put all ingredients into bread machine, and set to dough.
- When down knead it in your hands for a minute, trying to get all the air pockets out. Place on floured surface cut into 12 pieces.
- Shape your pieces so that they are somewhat circular, then using your thumb make a hole in the center, you may want to stretch it a bit as it will become smaller as the dough rises and bakes. Cover for 10 minutes. Pre-heat your oven to 400F.
- Place on a greased baking sheet, you may want to stretch the holes a bit again, your choice, ours rarely have holes anymore, they taste the same either way. Bake for 17-20 minutes.
*Update: I no longer have a bread machine (feel free to feel sorry for me, I do) and I am still using this recipe to make bagels for my family. I just spend 15 minutes kneading it and then let them rise for about 45 minutes to an hour. They still taste great!

Hi there! I’m visiting you from the Monday Blog Hop. I’m your newest twitter follower and would love a follow back
Take care,

Thank you for stopping by and the follow, I am now following you back!
Thank you for visiting my blog, loved hearing from you.
Oooh, can’t wait to try this recipe, my family loves bagels and I’m obsessed with making almost everything myself!
Will follow you on Twitter
I love to cook homemade breads, too. that way I can use whole wheat flour and not worry about which preservatives the prepared ones have. In normal directions, don’t you have to refrigerate them overnight or something and boil them before you bake them? This looks much easier. thanks for showing us yours!
In the original recipe it called for boiling. However, I discovered one day after making a couple batches that I hadn’t boil any of them, and they tasted just as good as ever and didn’t take nearly as long. If I knew where the original recipe was or could find it I would link to it, but its been forever.
I should also add that the original recipe wasn’t for a bread machine.
Great post! I would LOVE to make my own homemade bagels. I’d have to borrow my mom’s bread machine hehe.

I had ‘borrowed’ my mom’s, never gave it back and actually wore it out! LOL.
Oh my goodness! I am so glad I stumbled upon this today! I have a bread machine that I haven’t used yet. What a great and easy (and USEFUL) recipe to start out with!
I hope that you enjoy them! We definitely love them here.
