Yeast Infection Rash – Just Another Diaper Washing Day

I knew when we started with cloth diapers that it wouldn’t be without its bumps in the road, and we’ve had a couple now. Our biggest dilemma up to now was repelling.

Now baby girl Brookland has had a sore bum on and off for just about two months, 2 months! This Momma has felt horrible, it started after we switched to formula, so naturally we thought she was having a reaction to it, and tried a different kind. Her little bum got better, then worse.

Friday morning, at 9:15 I was able to get through to the pediatrician’s office, at 10am. I guess I should add that we got about 6 inches of snow Thursday night and early Friday morning. We all had to get dressed and out of the house. We ended up being 15 minutes late, but thankfully in this case, these doctor is usually running behind.

He diagnosed her bum as a yeast infection rash. Some cream was prescribed and we were sent home. From reading other CD blogs I know that my diapers need to be cleaned really well to make sure that once her rash is gone it doesn’t come back.

All diapers have been washed in very hot water with baking soda and detergent, the first rinse with vinegar followed by two more rinses. I also dried them in the dryer only, something I never do.

Have you had this problem? What did you do?

  1. I haven't encountered this. Your poor little one! I do know from researching cloth diapers that a lot of creams can ruin them and mess with their absorbancy. Hopefully you are using something between the cream your doc gave you and the diaper? Like bummis liners, I think they are called. Here, found the link. A worker in a baby boutique recommended these for when you have to use any sort of cream like diaper rash cream. They also might help it not come back sine your baby's bum would touch a clean new liner each time. http://www.bummis.com/ca/en/bio-soft-liners.php?adr=1

Hope your baby's bum feels better soon!!

  2. I have encounted yeast diaper rash before, (by the way it can spread to mouth so make sure to wash her hands after every diapering. I had a kid who had that happen because she kept putting her hands down her pants while playing. So we had to be very careful with her.) Be very careful of the diaper rash cream you use. Some of them can make it worse and cause the rash to come back. The one I saw most used was Isle Paste or Goats Milk Paste.

You sound like a great mom!

Thanks, we are using liners. My first thought when he told us what the cream was was that it could ruin my diapers! Sadly, I'm not seeing a lot of improvement in her little bum.

Thank you for mentioning about it going to her mouth, I didn't know this. Thankfully, she's not one to put her hands around her bum. So far I'm not finding the cream to be making a difference, I will look into the creams to mentioned. Thank you!!

We use CJ's without a liner and have never had a problem with repelling or anything.

We use CJ's for the most part as well, without a liner, however the cream the Dr gave us we use a liner with, just in case.

Awww poor thing! My little one had a rash in her diaper area not long ago, but I don't use cloth (although I wish I would have tried!). I used some cream we already had from a previous rash she had from Huggies (had to switch to Pampers) and it cleared up. Hope her little bum stays nice and comfortable now ;)
